The tower simply has an opening that says "optical in" that the cord will plug into. I can only guess it is intended for certain computers that have other ways you can plug the tower in besides USB it is certainly not for the headset itself, as the headset does not have any port that will fit the ends. Likewise, there is another cord that comes with the tower, but no mention of what this cord is for.

Granted, figuring out how to plug in the headset for charging purposes was easy, but why didn't it receive so much as a mentioned-in-passing in those documents? Or should I say, "that document" seeing as there were only the two small sheets of paper with the pairing instruction printed in two languages. That part of the product description was first and foremost in my mind.īut did the instructions it came with make any mention of this feature? Nope, the only thing mentioned in the included documentation was how to pair it for the surround sound. I bought it because it also (according to the description) will CHARGE your headset. I like the product so far, but the instructions leave a lot to be desired.įirst off, I know the wireless tower is made to provide surround sound, et cetera to your headset. Overall I'm please with this purchase and am looking forward to it's use!Īfterglow Universal Wireless Headset - Blue If anyone figures this out then please let me know! I'm not sure that you can get the Dolby 5.1 feature without the toslink. Hit the lights and you'll see that the whole thing is lit, however the brightest part of the tower is the top where the headphones sit.Īlso, its a bummer you can't use the ACM device that comes with the Sound Blaster Zx card with the tower. I recall one reviewer saying something about the led glow on the tower not being "everywhere". Before the headphones would cut in and out during audio playback if I walked around to far away from my computer, but now I can walk clear to the other side of my home and still get crystal clear reception.

I tried it out in a couple of games and it's all great! Also the range on the base versus the transmitter that came with the headphone is far better.

I rebooted my rig to confirm it wasn't just a glitch and everything was in place when Windows 10 booted up.

I had a music file playing and I went in selected the Dolby encoder and then unmuted the "What U Hear" selection in the Mixer tab of the Creative Pro Studio software, and what do you know? Everything came to life! This is odd because its under the "Recording" section of the software but nonetheless it works and I am a happy camper now.

I reinstalled the creative software a couple hundred times, played with the Windows Playback settings thousands of times, restarted the computer one hundred times more and was on the brink of giving up for the day when I noticed this. I never could get audio to come through to the headphones when I have the Dolby Digital on under the Cinematic tab, but as soon as I turned it off I had sound. I spent most of today fighting over this one setting. On the Advanced Features tab I have the "Play stereo mix to digital output selected (not sure if this is needed but works)īack up on the Mixer tab be sure to have the "What U Hear" slider UNMUTED. Go to the Cinematic tab and select Dolby (after which the Dolby Digital indicator light will come on at the base of the Dolby Tower) In the Creative Pro Studio Software select the speakers/headphones tab and select whatever your setup will be (2.1, 5.1, or Headphones)

Have the Speakers selected as your default Playback device (not the SPDIF-Out).Ĭonfigure the Speakers for 5.1 Surround (not Stereo) The light for "Digital Input" comes on at the base of the tower. The Tower is plugged in via toslink output on the sound card to the toslink input on the tower base. The trick is getting both the Windows Playback setup and the Creative software on the same page. The important thing is that the tower works and I now have Dolby 5.1 Surround on my headphones for use with my movies, music, and games.

Setup was not easy, but then it wasn't hard after looking back on everything because it was my fault to begin with. I have a PDP Afterglow Prismatic Universal gaming headset, and a Sound Blaster Zx sound card in my rig, and then this, the Afterglow Dolby 5.1 Wireless Tower. Yeah, not sure if PDP sold them this way or not, but hey, on to the review!! First off let me say I wasn't pleased with how this thing arrived (a white box with a small sticker on top), and although the item is as described, it would have been nice to know I was receiving an "open box" or repackaged looking item.
